High-yield atmospheric ozone generator as a component for sterilizing and disinfection in clean in place (CIP)

TheMediPlas® Reactor is a high-yield ozone generator from relyon plasma. The component is based on cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) and can be used for cleaning, sterilizing and disinfecting, for example in medical technology. The device generates plasma and RONS (reactive oxide and nitrogen species) and ROS (reactive oxide species) arising in the secondary plasma. The MediPlas® Reactor can reduce the concentration of pathogens in contact with contaminated surfaces like medical equipment, masks and tubing. Also odors and germs can be eliminated.

Different to VHP and ETO sterilizers, the MediPlas® system requires no additional chemicals. The MediPlas process uses just air (or oxygen) and electricity to produce efficient sterilant gases.  The applications do not require expensive vacuum equipment or toxic chemicals, making its use cost effective on one and environmentally friendly on the other hand. Also, the overall power consumption is low. 

Application areas

The cold atmospheric plasma components can be used anywhere where hygiene plays an important role. The ozone generator can be integrated in the medical and dental field, but also in the food industry, agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry and in packaging and consumer goods for disinfection and sterilization. The integration of the DBD component makes it possible to reprocess medical products without chemical and thermal disinfection. These plasma components are also used to generate clean air and clean water.

The typical clean in place cycle (CIP) can be optimized by integrating ozone generation. The typical clean in place cycle contains six steps:

  1. rinse
  2. wash
  3. rinse
  4. chemical/thermal disinfection
  5. rinse
  6. drying

The optimized clean in place cycle with the integration of ozone generation contains only four steps:

  1. rinse
  2. wash
  3. rinse
  4. disinfect

This leads to savings in time, energy and consumables.

Possible applications include and are not limited to:

  • Internal sterilization of home hemodialysis equipment
  • Dentist chair fluidic system sterilization
  • Low temperatures sterilization for medical tools
  • Hospital floor cleaning with plasma activated water

Multiple MediPlas® Reactor blocks can be arranged in parallel or in series to increase concentration and flow rate. One MediPlas®-Drive can supply three MediPlas®-Reactors.
